Washington DC is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States, and for good reason. The city is home to some of the best museums and restaurants in the country. But Washington DC is also home to something else- good weed.
In this article, we will talk about how you can get weed from Washington DC dispensaries by complying with the DC weed laws.
Does DC Have Recreational Dispensaries?
No, there isn't. While medical marijuana dispensaries have been operating in DC for years, there are no recreational dispensaries (sort of). This is because the DC Council has not yet created regulations for the sale of recreational cannabis.
However, that doesn't mean you can't buy recreational weed in DC. There are a number of smoke shops that also sell to Recreational customers. And as long as you have a valid ID, you can purchase cannabis from these shops.
How Do DC Dispensaries Work?
If you want to buy weed from a dispensary in DC, there are a few things you need to know. First, you need to be 21 years of age or older. You will also need a medical marijuana card. A medical marijuana card is a card that is issued by the DC Department of Health that allows you to purchase medical cannabis from dispensaries.
To get a medical marijuana card, you need to have a qualifying medical condition. These conditions include cancer, HIV/AIDS, glaucoma, and multiple sclerosis. You will also need to get a recommendation from a licensed physician.
Or you can get free recreational weed gifts from Initiative 71 shops like Top Level. They do not require medical marijuana cards so all you need is a 21+ state-issued ID like a driver’s license.
Getting Medical Marijuana Card In DC
To get a medical marijuana card in DC, you must first schedule an appointment with a doctor.
During your appointment, the doctor will ask you questions about your medical history and why you think medical cannabis would help you. If they determine that you qualify for a medical cannabis card, they will give you a recommendation.
Once you have your medical cannabis recommendation, you can then go to the DC Department of Health and get your medical marijuana card.
The process of getting a medical marijuana card in DC can be long and complicated. However, once you have your card, you will be able to visit any medical cannabis dispensary in the city and buy weed without any problems.
What If I Can't Get A Medical Marijuana Card In DC?
If you can't get a medical marijuana card in DC, don't worry. You can still buy weed from Initiative 71 compliant smoke shops as long as you comply with the DC weed laws.
Initiative 71 regulates the transfer and consumption of cannabis in Washington, DC. So, if you want to get weed in the capital, you must comply with these regulations.
What is Initiative 71?
The primary law on weed and marijuana in Washington is Initiative 71. The DC weed law is an off-shoot of several legislative policies to cater for cannabis issues in the capital. In 2011, the legalization became formalized, allowing dispensaries and cultivation centers to operate following an arduous permitting process.
In 2013, the medical use of weed was allowed, and two years later, recreational use followed. Initiative 71 was approved by nearly 65% of voters in the council, and the measure went into full effect on February 26, 2015.
Initiative 71 does not allow for the sale of cannabis in public places. Therefore, you cannot buy weed from a dispensary and consume it in public. You can only consume it on private property.

So Can You Buy Weed in DC?
The short answer is yes. While medical marijuana has been legal in DC since 1998, it wasn't until Initiative 71 was passed in 2014 that recreational weed became legal.
